Hypnosis: How it works

Hypnosis and hypnotherapy play two primary roles in our business model.

How hypnosis works

Most of use are not aware of how powerful our minds are and that 80% of our memories are based on pictures. Why is this important?

Let’s take an example of what we mean by our minds primary work on pictures.

We have all heard people say to us, “Don’t smoke” or another suggestion or command. Why does telling someone this not work? Because the person, whether they are aware of it or not, makes a mental picture in their mind of them smoking and then the mind must negate the picture or cancel it.

If you like to smoke, or more accurately, it is an addiction you now identify as part of your personality (I am a smoker), hearing the command, “Don’t smoke!” tends to create a desire to smoke because the brain must first create the picture. Once it creates the picture, if the dopamine hit is strong enough (just the thought bring enough pleasure), you are likely to stay in the emotion of pleasure and you forget or choose not to negate the picture.

In other words, any time you try to stop an addiction by telling yourself, “Don’t smoke, its bad for you.” Your mind creates the picture of pleasure, smoking the cigarette, and does not have the will power to ‘turn it off the pleasure response.’

So how do you change this?

2 steps.

First, associate the experience (of smoking) to the negative aspects of it. An example is your teeth look yellow and your partner tells you that your breath smells terrible. If we want, we can develop a list of other negative outcomes of smoking.

Develop a daily habit of reminding yourself of the negative outcomes from the habit. When you look at an x-ray or your lungs, for example.

Second, say to yourself, ‘I want white healthy teeth.’ It doesn’t’ matter what the picture is. What matters is that you think (imagine) about that picture every day, so your brain begins to create positive feelings (another dopamine hit) of what life could be like if you had a different habit.

In your mind’s ‘eye’ , when you feel the pleasure of these thoughts begin, your mind already believes it is happening (it is reality).
